Buddhist Ethics as Social Practice
Phuntsok "Pencho" Rabgey // Bateman Room
This year, Machik welcomes back Phuntsok “Pencho” Rabgey—writer, community builder and thought leader of socio-cultural and economic revitalization in contemporary rural Tibet. Pencho’s path has taken him from rural Tibet to Canada and back to Tibet again. Born in 1935 into a farming family in eastern Tibet, he left home early to become a monk, then a scholar, and later a husband and father. Over the span of a lifetime, he has determinedly kept the people of Tibet in his heart, through decades as a factory worker in small-town Canada, and eventually co-founding Machik with his family. Pencho and his wife answered a call to build a school for the children of his homeland, a decision that was an act of faith in the promise of human potential--the true reflection of our theme this year, “Dependent Arising.” In this workshop, he will share insight into his remarkable life and the values and mindset that drove his decision-making processes.
